gfire generates badassery and the height of artistry in her mystic presence. She walks into a room like she just returned from a magical forest, full of mystery and whimsy. gfire proves she has indeed been to a realm of mystery and understanding in this, her latest album, choosing my own colours. In this album she takes the listener along and shares her journey. gfire’s music transcends, descends, and ascends into the heavens. It pulls listeners to their feet, gets them chanting along, and leaves us with a love song. gfire's presence and music defy comparison.  

Listening to choosing my own colours is a melodic, immersive trip into the highs and lows of a genius punk rock rave goddess. The album opens with “pink”, stunning with a voice of fire and ice. Her vocals are instruments. They are chants. Through them, she weaves listeners into her dream of otherworldly wisdom. “yellow” disturbs with its prophetic poetry laid to synth and bass. When the chorus hits, the spell is cast. gfire proves her timelessness and transcendence in her utterly unique and somehow eternally familiar vocals. She evokes Lucinda Williams, and Laurie Anderson while sounding like none other than herself. 

The music of choosing my own colours is a landscape of sound. This album combines drums and bass with curated, high, and haunting vocal trills mixed with primal, deep notes of brassy truth. gfire leaves no doubt of her rootedness in years as a professional musician but surprises with her ability to remain authentic and believable in the layered panoramic soundscape gfire creates. The album mixes EDM, folk, rock and eastern mysticism with gleeful ease. The hearer wants to listen while dancing wildly with comrades at a rave or perhaps alone; while expanding on the world’s most comfortable rug and contemplating life in the glow of a lava lamp.

 Just when you think you understand where the album might take you, gfire punches with the closing song, “fade to blue.” Proving herself an artist unafraid to span every genre, gfire adeptly shifts to crooning over a banjo, bleeding fiddle, and washboard. gfire sings a universal love and loss song that is utterly relatable, vulnerable, beautiful and so good. Suddenly the rave seems wrong, and I wish to be near a fire listening to “fade to blue”. “fade to blue” has the audience engaged—lingering on her lyric, dancing to the electronic rip—and crying our eyes out at the moon.

 Bravo, gfire. You remind the listener of why we go searching out and hoping for new things from favorite artists. choosing my own colours has done just that. This album stands right up on its own, open to close. Proving she can sing a waltz and throw us into a trance, gfire captivates and leaves the listener a true believer in music's many-pronged capacities to delight, to disturb, and to change.

gfire's new album, Choosing My Own Colours, released on pink vinyl, exhibits a deeply abstract and close-knit relationship with sound and movement. She explains, "I do a lot of yoga, and the tracks are associated with the chakras. The track "pink" is associated with the 4th chakra, the heart center." gfire's voice is powerful and intuitive, embodying a unique essence that defies explanation. She takes the listener on a sensual journey with each track, skillfully weaving together her music, lyrics, voice, and the colors representing each song.

Choosing My Colours was produced by gfire, engineered by Stuart Sullivan (known for his work with Butthole Surfers, Sublime, and Willie Nelson), and mastered by Mark Hallman (who has worked with Carole King.) It also features compelling performances by Chris Gebhard on guitar, Danny Barnes on banjo, and Warren Hood on fiddle, to name a few.
